What Is Gear 5? A Quick Recap
Gear 5 is Luffy’s awakened Devil Fruit form, revealed during the fight against Kaido on Onigashima. Fans spent 20+ years wondering what Luffy’s “true” power would look like, and Eiichiro Oda answered with something nobody expected: a living cartoon.
How Luffy Unlocks Gear 5
Luffy’s Devil Fruit was never the Gum-Gum Fruit everyone assumed it was. It’s actually the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika — the mythical Sun God fruit. Gear 5 activates when Luffy fully awakens this fruit, turning his body, and the world around him, into something closer to a physical cartoon than a normal fighter.
Gear 5 Powers and Abilities
- Toon Force physics — Luffy can stretch, flatten, and bounce off literally anything, including the environment itself
- Turning objects into rubber — floors, weapons, even Kaido’s own attacks become bouncy and useless against him
- Massive strength boost — hits that previously barely scratched Kaido suddenly send him flying
- Color-shifting hair and eyes — the white hair and glowing red eyes are the clearest visual signal Gear 5 is active
- Drastically reduced stamina — the form burns through Luffy’s energy fast, which is why it can’t be used indefinitely
Key Episodes/Chapters Featuring Gear 5
Gear 5 first appears in Chapter 1044 of the manga and Episode 1071 of the anime, right in the middle of the Luffy vs. Kaido finale on Onigashima. If you’re hunting for the exact scene a GIF came from, that’s your starting point.

Gear 5 GIFs by Platform
Best for Twitter/X
Short, high-impact loops work best here — think the transformation flash or a single punch. Twitter compresses video hard, so punchy 1-2 second clips hold up better than longer ones.
Best for Discord
Reaction-style GIFs perform best in Discord servers. The shocked face, the smirk, and the goofy stretch clips get used constantly in anime and gaming servers.
Best for TikTok/Reels
Full transformation sequences with the sound intact work best for TikTok and Reels edits, especially when synced to trending audio or used as a hype cut before a reveal.
