Trace Cyrus is an American musician best known as the guitarist and vocalist of Metro Station, the pop-rock band behind the hit song “Shake It.” He is also widely recognized as the older brother of Miley Cyrus and the adopted son of country music star Billy Ray Cyrus. Although his famous family helped introduce him to a wider audience, Trace established his own identity through alternative rock, pop-punk and solo music.
Born Neil Timothy Helson on February 24, 1989, Trace grew up around music and entertainment. His career took off during the late 2000s, when Metro Station became popular with fans of electronic pop-rock and emo-inspired music. Outside the music industry, he has attracted public attention for his relationship with actress Brenda Song, his distinctive tattoos and his occasionally public discussions about family relationships.
So, who is Trace Cyrus today? Here’s a closer look at his age, background, musical achievements, estimated net worth, romantic history and relationship with the Cyrus family.
Who Is Trace Cyrus?
Trace Cyrus is a singer, guitarist and songwriter from Ashland, Kentucky. He rose to prominence as a member of Metro Station, a band he formed with musician Mason Musso in Los Angeles in 2006.
His musical style combines pop-rock melodies, electronic production and punk-influenced vocals. His connection to Miley Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus also made him a familiar name to audiences beyond the alternative music scene.
Although Trace is part of one of America’s best-known entertainment families, his professional career has followed a different path from Miley’s mainstream pop career. Rather than focusing on acting or television, he has concentrated on performing, songwriting and recording music.
His public image has also changed over time. In his early career, he was associated with the alternative fashion of the late 2000s, including long hair, dark clothing and extensive tattoos. In later years, he has continued to attract attention through his solo releases, social media posts and personal updates.
Trace Cyrus Age, Birthday and Early Life
Trace Cyrus was born on February 24, 1989, in Ashland, Kentucky, United States. As of October 17, 2026, he is 37 years old.
He spent his childhood in a family that later became closely connected to the music and entertainment industries. His mother, Tish Cyrus, worked in entertainment, while his stepfather, Billy Ray Cyrus, became internationally famous as a country singer.
Trace eventually moved toward Southern California, where he pursued music. His early exposure to the entertainment business gave him an understanding of touring and performance, but he still had to develop his own musical identity and establish himself as a working musician.
He left high school before graduating to focus on music, according to biographical accounts. His decision coincided with the development of Metro Station, which became the defining project of his early career.
Trace’s birthday also places him under the Pisces zodiac sign in Western astrology. Although fans sometimes search for his birth chart and zodiac details, these are separate from his professional accomplishments and publicly documented biography.
Trace Cyrus Real Name and Adoption Story
One of the most frequently searched questions about Trace concerns his birth name and biological father.
Trace Cyrus was born Neil Timothy Helson. After his mother married Billy Ray Cyrus, Billy Ray adopted Trace and his older sister, Brandi Cyrus. Trace’s name subsequently became Trace Dempsey Cyrus.
Is Trace Cyrus adopted?
Yes. Billy Ray Cyrus adopted Trace when he married Tish, becoming his legal father. This is why Trace is often described as Billy Ray’s adopted son and Miley Cyrus’s older half-brother.
The adoption is an important part of the Cyrus family’s history, but it does not mean Trace lacks a biological father. His biological father is Baxter Neal Helson, Tish Cyrus’s former husband.
Who is Trace Cyrus’s biological father?
Trace’s biological father is Baxter Neal Helson, a musician and Tish Cyrus’s former husband. Billy Ray Cyrus is his adoptive father.
The distinction helps explain why some biographies describe Trace as Billy Ray’s son while others identify Helson as his biological parent. Both descriptions can be accurate when their respective relationships are clearly explained.
Why was Trace Cyrus adopted?
Billy Ray adopted Trace and Brandi after marrying their mother, Tish. The adoption made them his legal children and brought them into the family alongside Miley and the children he and Tish later had together.
Public accounts establish the adoption and family relationships, but claims about private family motivations should not be treated as fact unless the people involved have explained them directly.
Trace Cyrus Height, Appearance and Tattoos
Trace Cyrus is frequently recognized for his distinctive appearance, particularly his facial tattoos, body art and alternative-rock style.
Celebrity biography websites commonly list his height at approximately 6 feet 3 inches (191 cm), although this figure should be treated as a reported measurement rather than a confirmed official specification.
His tattoos have been a prominent part of his public image for years. During Metro Station’s rise, his heavily tattooed appearance helped distinguish him from many mainstream pop performers. His style also reflected the alternative music scene of the late 2000s, when visible tattoos, dark clothing and expressive hairstyles were closely associated with pop-punk and emo culture.
Searches for Trace Cyrus before tattoos or Trace Cyrus without tattoos often reflect curiosity about how much his appearance has changed since his younger years. Older photographs provide a useful comparison, although lighting, hairstyle and image quality can make differences appear more dramatic.
Cyrus has also experimented with his hair over the years, wearing different lengths and styles. His look has evolved alongside his musical projects, but tattoos remain one of his most recognizable features.
Trace Cyrus Music Career and Metro Station
Trace Cyrus’s biggest career breakthrough came through Metro Station, the pop-rock group he co-founded with Mason Musso in Los Angeles in 2006. Musso’s brother, Mitchel Musso, was known for his work on Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana, creating a connection between the young musicians and the entertainment world surrounding the show.
Metro Station developed a sound built around catchy choruses, electronic textures and energetic guitars. The band initially attracted listeners online before gaining wider attention through its recording and touring activity.
How did Metro Station become famous?
The band’s self-titled debut album arrived in 2007. Its commercial breakthrough followed in 2008 with the single “Shake It,” which reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Metro Station’s signature hit.
“Shake It” became closely associated with the late-2000s pop-rock era. Its danceable production and memorable chorus helped it reach audiences beyond the alternative music scene.
The success also established Trace as a recognizable musician in his own right, rather than simply a member of Miley Cyrus’s family.
Why did Trace Cyrus leave Metro Station?
Cyrus left Metro Station in 2010 following tensions and creative differences within the group. He then focused on other musical projects, including Ashland HIGH.
The band’s lineup and activities changed over the following years. Cyrus later reunited with Musso and returned to Metro Station in 2014. The group released the album Savior in 2015 and continued working together intermittently.
These changes explain why different biographies describe Trace as a former member, returning member or musician associated with Metro Station. Those descriptions refer to different periods in the band’s history.
Is Trace Cyrus still in Metro Station?
Trace’s career has included periods away from the band and later reunions. He has also pursued music independently. For readers interested in his current lineup or touring status, the latest official band announcements are more reliable than older biographies that may describe a previous lineup.
Trace Cyrus Songs: From “Shake It” to Solo Music
Trace Cyrus is best known for his work with Metro Station, but his musical output extends beyond the group’s biggest hit. His projects have included alternative pop-rock, pop-punk and more recent solo releases.
Here are several songs and projects associated with his career.
“Shake It” — Metro Station
The band’s signature hit and the song most closely associated with Trace’s breakthrough. It remains a defining track of the late-2000s pop-rock scene.
Metro Station — debut album
The group’s 2007 album established its electronic pop-rock sound and provided the foundation for its later commercial success.
Ashland HIGH — Geronimo
This project marked a different phase in Cyrus’s career after he stepped away from Metro Station. It gave him another outlet for songwriting and recording.
“Lights Out” — solo release
Released in 2017, this single formed part of his move toward releasing music under his own name.
Other Trace Cyrus songs and releases
Listeners searching for Trace Cyrus songs may also encounter “Let’s Run Away,” “Dark Road,” “On the Run” and “Cowgirl Ride.” These releases reflect different stages of his musical development, including his interest in moving beyond the sound that made Metro Station famous.
His recent solo direction has included a country-influenced sound, a notable contrast with the electronic pop-rock style of “Shake It.” In January 2025, he discussed plans for a country album and teased a collaboration with Miley.
Lyrics searches often focus on songs associated with relationships, heartbreak and personal change. For accurate lyrics and release information, official artist channels and licensed music services are preferable to reposted text of uncertain origin.
Trace Cyrus Net Worth: How Much Is He Worth?
Trace Cyrus’s net worth is not publicly verified through an audited financial statement or a personal disclosure. Celebrity Net Worth has published an estimate of $2 million, but that number should be understood as a third-party estimate rather than a confirmed account of his wealth.
His career provides several potential sources of income:
- Music recordings: Revenue connected to Metro Station, Ashland HIGH and solo releases.
- Songwriting and performance: Work associated with creating and performing music.
- Live shows: Earnings from concerts, tours and other performances when booked.
- Business ventures: Past activities outside recording and performing, including a clothing business.
The amount Trace actually earns from any of these activities is not publicly established. A successful single does not automatically reveal an artist’s personal income because revenue can be divided among songwriters, performers, labels, publishers and other rights holders.
For that reason, a precise figure should not be treated as fact simply because it appears on a celebrity wealth website. His established music career is documented; his exact current assets, debts and earnings are not.
Trace Cyrus and Brenda Song: Relationship History
One of the most searched parts of Trace Cyrus’s personal life is his former relationship with actress Brenda Song, known for playing London Tipton in the Disney Channel series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.
The pair began dating around 2010 and had an on-and-off relationship that lasted several years. Their romance attracted considerable attention because both had connections to Disney-era entertainment, although Trace was primarily known for his music.
Were Trace Cyrus and Brenda Song engaged?
Yes. Trace proposed to Brenda in October 2011, and she accepted. The couple later called off their engagement, but their relationship reportedly continued intermittently before ending.
Their breakup became a subject of public discussion, with Trace sharing music and social media posts that fans connected to the relationship. However, interpretations of song lyrics and online posts do not necessarily establish the private details of a breakup.
The relationship is generally described as having ended by 2017.
Did Trace Cyrus and Brenda Song have a child?
No publicly documented child resulted from their relationship. Online searches sometimes combine the names of the former couple with questions about children, but those searches do not establish that they became parents together.
Brenda Song later began a relationship with actor Macaulay Culkin. The couple have two sons, born in 2021 and 2022, and announced their engagement in January 2022. Those children are Brenda’s children with Culkin, not Trace Cyrus’s.
What happened between Trace Cyrus and Brenda Song?
Their relationship ended after several years of dating and an engagement that did not lead to marriage. Both subsequently pursued their own lives and careers.
The public record supports the broad timeline of their romance, but more detailed claims about private arguments, alleged infidelity or the exact reasons for their separation should be treated cautiously unless supported by direct statements or reliable reporting.

Trace Cyrus has had several publicly reported relationships. His dating history has attracted attention because of his family connections and his association with other entertainers.

Trace Cyrus and Miley Cyrus: How Are They Related?

Miley was born in 1992, three years after Trace. Although they pursued different musical styles, both developed careers in entertainment.
Miley became internationally famous through the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana before establishing herself as a successful recording artist. Trace gained recognition through Metro Station and the alternative music scene.
Did Trace Cyrus appear in Hannah Montana?
Trace is not known for having a significant acting role in Hannah Montana. His connection to the series is primarily through Miley and the show’s cast, including Mitchel Musso, whose brother Mason co-founded Metro Station with Trace.
Trace did contribute to music connected to his sister’s career. In 2008, he appeared on “Hovering,” a track associated with the deluxe edition of Miley’s album Breakout.
Are Trace and Miley Cyrus close?
Their relationship has attracted public attention over the years, particularly as members of the Cyrus family have discussed family concerns and personal differences publicly.
Trace has also expressed concern about his father, Billy Ray Cyrus, in social media posts. These public statements show that family matters have occasionally become part of the news, but they do not provide a complete picture of private relationships between siblings.
It is more accurate to describe their relationship as a family connection that has received public attention than to make a definitive claim about how close they are at any particular moment.
Trace Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus: Their Family Relationship
Trace’s relationship with Billy Ray Cyrus is another recurring topic in entertainment news. Billy Ray adopted Trace and Brandi after marrying Tish, and the family subsequently became known internationally through music and television.
Although Billy Ray’s country career differs from Trace’s alternative-rock background, music has been a shared element of their lives. Trace also had opportunities to observe the professional side of the industry while growing up around a touring musician.
In more recent years, Trace has publicly voiced concerns about his father’s well-being. Such statements have prompted discussion about tensions within the family, but allegations and interpretations should remain attributed to the people who made them rather than treated as independently established facts.
Who are Trace Cyrus’s siblings?
Trace is part of a blended family that includes five siblings:
- Brandi Cyrus: His older sister, who works in entertainment and music.
- Miley Cyrus: His younger half-sister, a singer and actress.
- Braison Cyrus: His younger half-brother, a musician and actor.
- Noah Cyrus: His younger half-sister, a singer-songwriter.
- Christopher Cody Cyrus: His paternal half-brother, Billy Ray’s son from an earlier relationship.
Trace and Brandi are Tish’s children from her previous relationship with Baxter Neal Helson. Billy Ray adopted both of them. Miley, Braison and Noah are children of Billy Ray and Tish, while Christopher Cody is Billy Ray’s son with Kristin Luckey.
What Is Trace Cyrus Doing Now in 2026?

His career has included solo releases, collaborations and projects outside the band’s original sound. In 2025, he discussed plans for a country-influenced album, indicating an interest in exploring musical styles beyond the electronic pop-rock that first made him famous.

- Metro Station’s breakthrough and touring years.
- His work with Ashland HIGH after leaving the band.
- His return to Metro Station and later independent releases.
- Solo music that incorporates alternative rock and country influences.
Trace also maintains a public presence through social media, where music updates and personal posts have contributed to continued interest in his life.
For the most accurate information about new songs, tours or collaborations, his official social media accounts and verified music profiles are better sources than old news stories that may describe earlier plans.
Trace Cyrus Movies and Television Appearances
Trace Cyrus is primarily a musician rather than an actor. Unlike Miley, whose career has included substantial film and television work, Trace’s public identity has largely centered on bands, songwriting and live performance.
He is associated with the entertainment world through his family and has appeared in music-related material, including work connected to his father and sister. However, there is no substantial acting filmography comparable to Miley Cyrus’s.
Was Trace Cyrus in The House Bunny?
Searches sometimes connect Trace Cyrus with The House Bunny, the 2008 comedy starring Anna Faris. However, he is not widely documented as a credited cast member in the film. His connection to the entertainment industry should not be confused with a confirmed acting credit.
Similarly, his association with Hannah Montana largely comes from his relationship with Miley and his musical career, rather than a regular acting role in the series.
For film credits, IMDb and official production listings can help distinguish verified appearances from mistaken associations.
